Years 5–9

Critical Reading and Writing for Years 5–9

Building the reading habits that everything later depends on — active, strategic and critical reading, alternating fortnightly with writing routines.

One-to-one, 50 minutes, online or face to face in Wallsend.

Students alternate between reading and writing routines each fortnight, with every session following a routine that can be reinforced at home. Texts are selected based on each student’s ability, and as they build skills, more challenging texts are introduced.

This is the stage where reading habits are formed. Most students who struggle with English in Years 10–12 are not struggling with essay structure — they are struggling because decoding, comprehension and analysis were bundled together years earlier and never separated out.
